Mary Beard provides a vivid account of Pompeian life; politics, pleasures, housing and commerce, religion and cults. There are many particular observations about the town not found elsewhere and some nice touches of humour. A useful and enjoyable read, with much useful material for teachers - discussion of the port, for example, and a reading of the Forum fresco from the House of Julia Felix, a very useful source.
